This is a question I have long asked myself as an interior designer. I have always felt that your home should be as much of a true expression of your personality as your wardrobe.
God blessed us with sight, so that we could see all the beautiful colours of nature and all that his wonderful universe has to offer. There is a rich palette of so many wondrous colours available to us these days and indeed the looks and styles that begin their life on the catwalk are usually found trending within the interiors industry the following season. So please tell me, why should your home not be as fabulous as your wardrobe?
Of course, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with beige & grey. They are colours that I use within schemes but in small measure along with lashings of glorious colour.
Most of us do express our personality through the way we dress, it makes us who we are, as does our home, it should be a true reflection of the people who dwell there. Always comfortable and homely but always fabulous and colourful enough to be an interesting and wonderful experience for those who come to visit as well as the homeowners.
Let us for a moment consider the Italians and their perfect ability to fuse many colours together and create a masterpiece in any situation. From the darling port of stunning Portofino in northern Italy, which is dotted with brightly coloured painted houses along the cliffside & shoreline, through to the priceless artwork that dresses the walls of the Vatican & the incredible ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Not a lot of beige and grey in sight I hear you say. Let us also not forget the seasonal catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana, with their heavily embroidered floral gowns, shown to the world in a myriad of glorious technicolour.
Imagine how you feel when you slip on that brightly coloured Dolce & Gabbana couture gown, your feet position daintily into a brightly coloured satin pair of Manolo Blahnik Hangisi heels. Under your arm you carry an equally delicious, Blahnik clutch and you are adorned with stunning jewellery. Now tell me, do you feel beautiful? Do you feel magnificent? Do you feel better than you have ever felt in your life? The answer is a resounding yes, of course you do. Nothing makes you feel as good as beautiful attire.
My mother always said that, "Fine feathers make beautiful birds." It is absolutely true and I can tell you that whenever I have been wearing any of the above I have felt a million dollars. These beautiful pieces do something to a woman that she would never be able to explain in a million years, especially to her husband. Unless of course he was Valentino Garavani, Oscar De La Renta or Manolo Blahnik.
So, for a moment longer, keep those eyes closed tightly and imagine your clothes becoming your home interiors. I would like to explain here that I’m not expecting you to cover your home with glitter and fairy dust, quite the opposite. However, what I would like you to try and visualise is your passion for fashion, converted into an expression of who you are within your home interiors. Do you feel excited? I hope so. Your home should make you feel happy and excited every time you walk through the door. Mine certainly does. My home is an extension of my love for colour, my creativity and my personality. It gives me just as much joy as that Dolce & Gabanna couture gown hanging in my closet and various pairs of Manolo’s sitting on my dressing room floor.
I will leave you with a quote from my great friend, Marie Dagge – "Why would you not dress the table for your dinner guests as you would dress yourself?"
Marie, I could not agree more!
Life is too short to be grey, so go on, be daring and embrace colour.
